I know myself and my body because I’ve been racing for so many years.  I’ve had a lot of coaches and trainers; GOLDS Gym, LA Fitness, LifeTime Fitness, Crossfit gyms, I’ve been on bike teams, and trained at bike studios and swim clubs.  Most coaches are specific to one area and don’t integrate.  They’re like “Here’s your workout.  Good luck with that.” I have so much experience inside myself and I just need to get it out on paper and have a hard time doing that.

With Kym I talk through what I know I need, so I’m more intentional and holistic about what I do.  The Zest Ed check in and follow up makes it very personal and is about getting you to the level that you want to get to.  Kym asks me “How did that feel?” and then I can get ready for my next week.  Designing my own program with guidance from Kym has given my empowerment over my training.  It’s much more effective for me.

Challenges I’ve faced in pursuing my goals:

• Last year I suffered injuries in my knee and shoulder.  For two years I had pain at my hamstring attachment.  With Zest Ed there was more intentional training around those areas.  Everything is feeling a lot better.

• Being consistent recording completed workouts.  It’s important so I can look back and see what I’m missing and where the gaps are.  I like the biking and swimming but I don’t like to run, but the running is key.  So I have to really put some thought into recording my workouts and putting my week together.

• Nutrition.  I need to put more attention around my nutrition to make sure that I’m eating enough and getting the right nutrient to help with peak performance.

Things I’ve learned in Zest Ed:

• The importance of having a team around me for resources to access when training or performance goes sideways.

• Embracing my strengths as I’m an aging athlete.

• By having guidance reviewing my yearly plan, my workouts have been focused to particular goals and resulted in better performance.

• A conversation about race strategy was key to my success in the 100k mountain bike race.  I can endure a lot physically, but switching the mindset between a 2 hour race and a 10 hour race can really play havoc with the results.  Last year I wasn’t able to finish.  This year because I had to tell Kym my plan and she asked me questions I hadn’t thought of.  The conversation insured that I had enough water and food and was able to have a consistent pace and finish the race well.
